New York painter Travis Louie is gearing up for his first solo show at Joshua Liner Gallery. Here are three of 15 acrylic-on-panel paintings that will be featured in the show. Travis Louie admits to a youthful fascination with sci-fi and horror and it shows in his bizzare yet intriguing portraits. Travis Louie’s Curious Myths opens this Friday, July 10 from 6-9 pm at the NY gallery.

The “Who Killed The Music” art show co-curated by will.i.am kicked off with a bang above the Grammy Museum at the LA Live Target Terrace. The show which features a rockstar lineup of 15 artists including Travis Louie, Kris Lewis, David B. Smith, Camille Rose Garcia, Audrey Kawasaki, Travis Louie, Van Arno, Lola, Mercedes Helnwein, Kris Lewis, Paul Chatem, Nathan Spoor, Justin BUA, Jason Thielke, Gregory Euclide, Sarah McColgan, Jeremy Lipking, and Ron Lipking.

Jeff Soto, Travis Louie, Buff Monster, Audrey Kawasaki, and Yosay Yamamoto are just some of the artists that are on this impressive lineup. The goal of the retreat is to keep a personal environment with a 4-to-1 guest to artist ratio by allowing only 45 spots available to the public. This ratio doesn’t factor in the numerous alumni coming back and hanging out for the weekend. Basically, it’s a behind-the-scenes look at your favorite artists working

Travis Louie’s hypnotic “portraiture” is compelling for its blend of the hyper realistic with the blatantly unreal. Fantastical creatures gaze out from paintings so technically refined (using transparent layers of acrylic paint over a tight graphite drawing on a smooth flat surface) that they look uncannily like old photographs. Adding to the discomfiting presence these animal/monster like chimeras have are the human expressions- even if the creature in the paintings looks a bit bizarre, it also looks spookily familiar as well.

Often in his work Louie seeks to create mythological ancestors…long-lost “relatives” captured in Victorian cabinet card/ tint type images. His own interest in Noir imagery, German Expressionism, and personal dream imagery. Each painting comes with a “bio” about each character, written by the artist.

This exhibition will feature 8 larger scale works by Travis. The artist will be in attendance at the opening and signing copies of his new book “Curiosities”, which will be available at the gallery.
