Just in time for Spoke Art’s Quentin vs. Coen Round Two, opening June 2nd at the new permanent gallery space in San Francisco, comes the latest from Australian artist Rhys Cooper.

Entitled “Quentin’s Angels (of Death and Violence), these three prints represent “the good” and are the first in a continuing series created exclusively for Spoke Art by Cooper. Each print is hand numbered, comes in an edition of 125, and is only $30 a piece. As an added bonus, there is something very special about this edition, we can’t tell you much, but let’s just say that the folks who pick these up won’t be disappointed…

Prints are available here. Quentin vs. Coen Round Two opens June 2nd at Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco.

Politician and artist Matt Gonzalez and veteran painter Tom Schultz will team up for a two man show honoring their friendship and the relationship between their art at a.Muse in blah. Paper vs. Brush, a clever nod to their respective styles of paper collaging and painting opens in April.

While Schultz’s pieces have a bold, colorful geometric consistency, Gonzalez is as versed in color as he is in subtle shades of white, resourcefully using every bend and turn of his found objects to “draw” his curves and lines. Paper vs. Brush exhibition runs through May 30th.

“I believe the final impact of a work of art should be a felt experience;” Schultz says of the work, “that is to say, an emotional one, without which it is nothing more than an intellectual exercise.”

Amy Ahlstrom is leading a growing trend of ultramodern fiber-based art better known as quilting. Affectionately referred to as, The Urban Quilter, Amy acts as “part documentarian, part DJ,” to create pop-art inspired postcards of her favorite urban places. Growing up in a family of quilters, sewers, and knitters gave the San Francisco based artist her start. Her background as a comic illustrator and graphic designer gave her style.

Amy is currently working on the first piece from her Splice series. According to a press release, the body of work is, “an interpretation of her experience photographing graffiti in Oakland’s Fruitvale train yards. It brings together a more traditional quilting technique called strip piecing and her unique visual storytelling.” Expect bigger works and more work. While The Mission District is home, also expect her to explore San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. Take a closer look at more of Amy’s work below.

San Francisco based artists Hugh Leeman, David Young and Eddie Colla recently completed this mural outside the Kokoro Gallery in San Francisco, CA. Here’s what Hugh Leeman had to say about the recently completed mural:

I recently completed a 12′ x 26′ mural collaborating with artist David Young and Eddie Colla. This wall was made possible by the owners of Kokoro gallery in San Francisco, who are throwing an Indian Summer party, of all the walls I’ve covered I’ve never had the opportunity to move a teepee before I could start, much less one that has zebra print and a massive long horn skull with electric red light bulb eyes on it. Between the mural and acid trip teepee people walking down the street ranged from incredibly excited to pure bewilderment. Happy to have made this addition to what was an otherwise bland wall in a marginalized district of San Francisco.
-Hugh Leeman

If you have a great photo of “Art is Everywhere” email it to info@an-mag.com with the subject message “ART IS EVERYWHERE.”

Painter Hugh Leeman is a part of a mural project in the Lower Haight District of San Francisco. The finished mural will be comprised of around a dozen artist featuring Doze Green, Mars-1, Jeremy Fish, Romanowski and others. Below are some pics of Hugh’s and other artist’s contributions to the wall. To the left you can see paintings by children in the community.

“[The] wall has been blank for years and often gets tagged over only to be painted over by the city,” Hugh explains. “After months of work by Lower Haighters art gallery and persistence in securing permits from the city the wall will now be covered with our artwork until its slated demolition in one year.”

“It was an interesting day having people come up to tell me how happy they are to look out their windows and see public art like this taking place, exciting to think how many more instances we could have walls like these with a bit more of an open mind towards street art,” Hugh later adds.

Mario Wagner, born in 1974, works as an artist and illustrator in San Francisco/USA. Wagner creates his works using analog methods of collage incorporating vintage print media. The execution requires finesse with scissors and glue to ultimately transform his vision from the mental to physical plane of existence. His work has been shown internationally and across the US in exhibitions at SCOPE, ART Basel Miami and the upcoming NADA Art Fair with the Pool Gallery from Berlin. Wagner’s commercial illustrations and artworks have been commissioned by Esquire, Playboy, Vanity Fair, and The New York Times Magazine.

Wagner’s latest body of work is currently being exhibited at San Francisco’s Gallery Heist. The show entitled Observed by Clouds,is the artist’s first solo show in San Francisco since relocating to the art hub from Cologne, Germany earlier this year. In the show, Wagner utilizes imagery from the 1950s and 60s with pieces that convey a sense of vintage futurism in beautifully anachronistic micro-narratives that describe one visual point in some larger, unknown story. The show runs through September 25. Mario Wagner is An-Mag.com’s Artist of the Week. Take a closer look at his sci-fantasy works.

He recently posted a piece of Jesus, yesterday (Sept 1). Akira’s new work is themed off pop culture icons. Jesus, Fonzie from Happy Days and more become Akira’s subjects.

San Francisco based artist Akira is part of the Tenderloin artist community. Akira is known for painting layered portraits of pop culture icons and these new works don’t disappoint fans of his earlier work. Take a closer look at Akira’s new work below.
