Visual artists can pack a punch as mean spirited as Floyd Mayweather just as good as the paintbrushes and pencils they use to make their masterpieces. Whether it’s Picasso and Giacometti or Banksy and Mr. Brainwash, visual artists are no strangers to slick comments about their contemporaries. It was Manet, who told his friend Claude Monet to tell Renoir to “give up painting.” And Picasso’s temper and critical words for other was well noted, just ask Getrude Stein. Here are some of the more outrageous and rude things artists have said about each other over time.
Who says that there is rules in art today? Who says what you cannot do? Learn about my past and tell me what I am in the present -Mr. Brainwash
Since the debut of the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop produced by the London famed artist Banksy, great popularity has been garnered to the man known as Thierry Guetta aka Mr. Brainwash. The opening of his debut show “Life is Beautiful,” gave Mr. Brainwash great recognition both good and bad. He was featured on the cover of LA Weekly which was the light that sparked the interest about this unknown Frenchman. Read MoreI recently had the pleasure of attending Los Angeles based French street artist, Mr. Brainwash‘s first solo show entitled “Icons” in a converted gallery in New York City. Mr. Brainwash filled the entire two story space with his Andy Warholesque pop portraits of fashion, music, art & business icons, prints, and large scale sculptures of taxis, paint buckets, and spray paint cans.
I enjoyed that the entire space was used as the artist’s playground. I love when galleries let an artist do more than simply hang pieces on the walls. If you’re unfamiliar with Mr. Brainwash, he’s the artist that recently worked on Madonna’s CD packaging for her latest album Celebration. Check out images from the show below. Wow! Mr. Brainwash outdid himself with this wheatpaste mural on a street in New York City of Madonna and Angelina Jolie. He’s the same artist that created Madonna’s recent greatest hits package Celebration.
