Humor is the crux of Joka‘s work. So it’s no wonder the Philadelphia based artist’s toothpick paintings having me laughing as hard as I’m in awe. It’s not that they’re funny. In some sense, it’s disconcerting to the sane eye. It’s not really the subject matter, it’s his process, a term he coined called hyperpointillism. He works entirely with toothpicks. Wow.
Now this is something to look forward to. Next Wednesday, Los Angeles will take over Atlanta as J*DaVeY and Blu hit the Masquerade. The show is apart of their joint 15-date New World Culture Tour. Being a huge fan of J*DaVeY I’m more than excited about this show. I can’t wait to hear live versions of new tracks from their latest project the Evil Christian Cop EP.
Find out how you can win a pair of tickets to see J*DaVeY and Blu on us after the jump.
My good friend Corinne Stevie put me on to this. She knows how much of a big Brandy fan I am and posted this video of Gumshoe on my Facebook page. What the Los Angeles based singer lacks in visuals, she makes up for with effort. It’s a mellow organic take on Brandy’s computerized romp. I love it, because it’s an unexpected take on an even more unexpected song. Watch the video for Gumshoe’s version of ‘What About Us?’ below.
Hustle, hustle, grind, grind. That has to be Patrick Martinez‘s theme song. The Los Angeles based artist recently opened his latest exhibition entitled Hustlemania at Known Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. The exhibition featured a bevy of light fixture pieces we’ve featured on An-Mag.com, paintings and my favorite piece which was undoubtedly the life size sculpture of a male figure holding neon colored water guns. Awesome commentary and visual stimulation. The show even attracted another big LA street artist–Mr. Brainwash.
And they say Monday’s are always filled with ennui. This Monday, Feb 21st, Los Angeles based duo J*DaVeY decided to make today feel like the weekend and drop their latest mixtape Evil Christian Cop. Fans have been waiting patiently for some new work from the duo and now they’ve help up their end of the bargain. The beauty and the beat are currently gearing up for their joint Spring tour with Blu. Take a listen and download the five track mixtape after the jump.
If you need anymore proof that Dub Step is about to become as mainstream as a pop princess take one listen to Britney Spears’ undeniable hit “Hold It Against Me,” which has a sick dub step breakdown. So what’s next for dubstep? Meet Sonny John Moore better known as Skrillex. The Los Angeles born, 23 year-old musician’s last record, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, is amongst the first dubstep albums released on a major label (Big Beat/Atlantic).
Erik Mark Sandberg plans to get pretty by showing the ugly side of consumer Stockholm syndrome. With his latest body of work set to debut later this month at Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York, The Los Angeles-based artist explores consumer culture, celebrity idolatry and the social dysfunction in the digital age that we all are doing our best to make sense of. In his usual vibrant style, Erik makes references to Hip-hop, Teen Vogue and juxtaposes these images with his interest in the family unit.
I never thought I’d have to type a headline like the one above. I mean who knew “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” a song with so much angst, it’s more depressing than anything. Well leave it to J*DaVeY to sex anything up. The Los Angeles-based duo recently released this cover and well, it’s a bit lusty, like i like it. Lead singer Jack Davey brings new meaning to the lyrics “with the lights out” every-time she coos them. Listen and download the track after the jump.
