Santiago, Chile based artist Rodrigo Araya Salas is a pixel pusher. It was Picasso that said all children are born artists, it’s remaining one as an adult that is tricky. According to Rodrigo, he’s been a designer, illustrator, font creator since childhood and well into adulthood he doesn’t look like he plans to switch it up. Take a closer look at Rodrigo’s work below.
Atlanta based musician Jessie Davis approached me a couple months back about doing art work that represented a song on her new album Him and I Gemini. Jessie expressed to me that she wanted to have a piece of art that represented each song that she would release online and I thought this was a pretty cool concept so I was down to do the work. Originally it was suppose to be four artists doing four different pieces of work for the songs but the way everything worked out I ended up becoming the leading artist for the project which was really exciting. Here are four illustrations that go along with the 4 released singles from Jessie Davis’s second album Him and I Gemini.
Star Trak taught Marcus Johnson. It’s apparent when browsing through the 27-year-old artist’s portfolio which is filled with awesome renderings of Pharrell Williams, N*E*R*D, The Clipse and Fam Lay. Marcus isn’t solely biased to the Star Trak camp, with a pencil and paper as his weapon he releases an arsenal of images of other notable Hip-Hop figures such as Jay-Z, Big Sean & Drake. Take a closer look at Marcus’ work after the jump.
Sex, Money, and Youth; Wouldn’t it be oh-so-great to have them all?
Although she is the go-to illustrator for magazines and children book publishers, Nata Metlukh has a dark side. Separate from her commercial work which finds the San Francisco based artist designing for clients, Nata’s personal sketchbook series paints an entirely different portrait of the artists. Art Nouveau recently caught up with Nata to talk about her work, commercial art vs personal art and more.
As an art editor I receive countless submissions. A majority of them aren’t for Art Nouveau. Sometimes it seems as if artists aren’t reading the site. If you browsed through Art Nouveau for two minutes you’d get a pretty solid gist of the type of work we are looking for. Thank whatever or whomever you pray to that Yis Goodwin aka NoseGo knew who he was submitting to. The Philadelphia based artist recently introduced his artwork to us and we’re glad to share it.
Illustrator Rudy Gutierrez’s work has given me so much inspiration this week. I love how his work has such a cultural feel. The colors, the exaggeration of the figures and the tribal markings really brings out his unique style of illustrating. He also throws in the Basquiat crown every now and then and I love it. For more on Rudy Gutierrez google him or go look at some pics below.
Kevin Bongang is for the Red Stripe hero in you! Originally born in Cameroon, Africa, then raised in Columbia, SC and then Savannah, GA, the Atlanta based illustrator has been pushing his unique style of rendering while pursuing aspirations of teaching art. Atlanta based painter/graphic designer Paper Frank is doing a damn good job of permeating the Atlanta art scene. Bright, engaging and youthful, I was introduced to Frank’s work by Scarlett Spade of CocainePretti, and since then I’ve enjoyed working with him on events (Super Pop, Tabloid and Art Nouveau’s Three year Anniversary Party) and watching his career flourish. Now an apprentice at Atlanta based tattoo shop City of Ink, the self-taught artist is working on a upcoming solo show. Paper Frank is Art Nouveau Magazine’s Artist of the Week. Take a closer look at his work below. Photos courtesy of Paul Abraham Photography.
