If You Have 20-something Minutes To Spare, Watch Ari Aster’s “The Strange Thing about the Johnsons”

Life is beautiful in the way that it works. One day, I was discussing to a friend of mine about all of my phobias and all the lies I tell myself. The day after, I was confronted with The Strange Thing about the Johnsons which is a short film all about the lies we tell ourselves. Ari Aster (director/screenwriter) tells an intense tale of a well-to-do family that holds a disturbing secret.

A satirical look at family secrets, sexuality, incest, power, and morality, The Strange Thing about the Johnsons is one of the more gripping and interesting stories that I’ve seen in a very, very long time. It has sparked conversation with my peers and me, and more importantly it sparked conversation with my own self. Not to mention, it is extremely refreshing to see such an unconventional story (to be told cinematic-ally) with an all-black cast and no affiliation with Tyler Perry, though one of the stars looks eerily similar to the superstar director and producer.
