Stella Im Hultberg’s In Progress Self Portrait
Brooklyn, NY based artist Stella Im Hultberg recently posted this photo of an in progress self-portrait. The piece is for an upcoming show at London Miles Gallery, entitled “Idol Hours,” where each artist chooses an older masterpiece to re-interpret. Stella has decided to take on Egon Schiele’s Double Self-Portrait seen below. Stella chose this piece because she believes she can “tackle it from the angle of the subject matter…without tainting the original artist.”
Though the self-portrait is coming out awesome so far, this is the first time Stella painted herself. She admits she doesn’t model for her paintings normally.
“Many people have told me that they thought i paint my own face, (like this piece, for example),” Stella writes on her blog. “but this above is my first time [painting my face].”
“I’ve always wanted to experience painting a real person, and i never thought I’d be my first real model…after painting made up, nationality-less faces for years, it’s odd to paint a face that i can’t… ‘control’ the looks of,” She later explains.
Idol Hours opens Nov 12 at London Miles Gallery and features work by Nom Kinner King, Rober Marquez, Mike Bilz and a bevy of other artists. Take a closer look at Stella’s work in progress and some sketchbook warm-ups below.
