Turnabout is fair play, especially in music. Echo Park’s Rainbow Arabia scoured the globe for the appropriated rhythms that make up their so-called “fourth world pop” (think post-M.I.A. electronica with an ethnomusicological flair). The new remix album now dissects and redistributes RA’s own music in eight tracks pulled largely from their latest release Kabukimono. Night falls as the sunnier beats of the original go clubbing in the reimaginings of RA and guest DJs (including Mexicans With Guns, Max Justus and Myd). Some of the “world music” charm is traded away for a steady dance beat, but if you’re looking for a “Holiday in Congo” (and only have enough cash for a houseparty) you could hardly do better.
