Let’s Get Together: An Interview With Scanners

July 20, 2010 |  by

When I speak with the all members of London born band Scanners they’ve just wrapped up a photoshoot. The band, more like friends than bandmates, seem to have the greatest time around each other. It shows. The band was born when lead singer Sara met guitarist Matt and needed more people to play at some point, a couple of years after they added blank to the band.

“We kinda got together by playing,” Sara explains.

Adding new members with new skills and likes and dislikes definitely progressed the sound of the band. No longer were they confined to electronic drum machines, they now had the full effect of live instruments.

“New band members, new instruments,” Sara says. “We kind of got all these more interesting instruments.”

This sound they’ve created is a sound Matt describes as “Stark, Girly and beautiful.” The entire band laughs at Matt’s remark.

“We don’t want the music to be too clean sounding,” Matt explains. “But we like quite a bit of different styles, we want to make sure we keep an edge originally we were a punk band so we want to keep that energy.”

Although Scanners are a UK based band, they’ve found more success in the United States. It’s here they were signed to Dim Mak records. And it’s here the music has begun to impress everyone from Urban Outfitters shoppers to Dim Mak creator and Superstar DJ Steve Aoki.

“We got signed in America before London so I mean that’s definitely the reaction to our music in America Mina says. “They love it in America and we love coming here. We’re trying to just conquer the world”

In fact it was a chance encounter that got Scanners’ music in the hands of Steve Aoki. They were playing a gig in the UK, and a woman from Capitol Records who creates music mixtapes got their music, put it on one of her mixtapes and handed it to Steve Aoki.

“He liked it,” Sara says. “We were literally making our first album on our own in London, we sent them the demoes nad he said finish it and I’ll release it.”

“We were negotiating our record deal with him while he was in the shower. It was quite funny a lot of more word of mouth than contracts are usually done,” Sara later explains.

The band is currently on a promo tour blitz and are in and out of cities across the world seemingly every night. They love the life on the road too much. Matt even calls the experience “amazing.”

“For us it’s a holiday,” Matt says. “It’s what we want to do if weren’t on tour, so this way we get to do it with friends and check out the world it’s amazing.

Scanners full length album Submarine is out now. Watch the video for their single “Salvation” below.
