Multi-disciplinary artist Evan Mann has been pushing work through multiple mediums. For the artist allowing the process of each medium to influence the next is the crux of his work. From print, to sculpture, to drawing, photography, videography, and then back to print again; Evan continues to push concepts and watch his work evolve and grow. In his latest short film THE BODY, Evan gives his unique self-referencing process a moving visual. The film is composed of stop-motion animations and kinetic sculptures in an attempt to translate his studio work into the time-based medium of video.
By utilizing materials such as clay, shaving cream, feathers, fur, fabric, and dry ice, Evan created the internal and external workings of a landscape-organism. Sonically, his body is the only instrument. And if you’re in the Northeast part of the US you can catch more of Evan’s work tonight at RISD’S Facade Media Festival.
This film is an exploration of mystery; it could be a body, not necessarily human or physical, but a living organism with many parts that work and function together to make a perfect whole. It could also depict the unattainable, that which we are unable to perceive, those mysteries that dwell beyond our senses: the raw, real and organic commencing with supernatural and unexplainable power; life meeting death, the splitting of flesh and spirit, the fullness of eternity, etc. This video is a means for me to wrestle and engage with these mysterious forces.
