Facebook wants you. Well you and everything about you. Information is crucial these days, because information is the new currency. In his recent keynote at Facebook’s F8 conference, Mark Zuckerberg talked about how the company is implementing “frictionless” sharing. Though, “frictionless” isn’t exactly the best word choice.
After a visit to New York City in 1971, Blek le Rat became influenced by early graffiti works. Back in Paris, Blek decided to bring his brand of street works to his hometown. Much like his name, he spread his work like rats spread the plague. Part Graffiti, part Richard Hamilton styled works, Blek is credited with being the inventor of the life-sized stencils.
There’s that moment when you see your heroes for who they really are–people. After watching the UK’s Channel 4 documentary Banksy Vs. King Robbo: Graffiti Wars I almost came to see Banksy in a different light. Minutes in gone was the praise and admiration for where he’s made it to, replaced by a nasty view of him. The feeling was what the film intended to project. But, as the film progressed, I couldn’t help but stay team Banksy.
Street art is a dangerous game. If you aren’t worrying about authorities, it’s your contemporaries, so being precise and stark is just part of the job description. Internationally known street artist Gabriel Specter has all that covered.
The film industry has let me down time and time again. So much that after the disappointment that was Avatar in 3D, I vowed never again to pay for a movie. I reneged on that recently and caught Contagion, and I must say my faith has been renewed. The film had a bit of everything in it, conspiracy stories, up to date technology, it felt very real, and the thrill was off the charts. Although most people would marvel at the star studded cast which consisted of Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne and Beyonce’s best pal Gwyneth Paltrow. But what really caught my eye was the inclusion of strategically placed street art.
Every now and then I stumble upon a piece of art that stops me dead in my tracks. That happened during my recent trip to Atlanta. While walking downtown, I came across this piece by an artist who’s still unknown to me. Needless to say, I was dumbfounded. I stopped for at least ten minutes to marvel and take photos at the massive piece. This is what Street Art is about.
Most of the time Malarky can be found putting vibrant colors on the cold gray streets of London. The rest of the time you can find him, cold beer in hand, painting a truck with popping reds, yellows and pinks under the piercing sunshine of Barcelona. No matter where in the world Malarky is, the artist takes it as a challenge to beautify the world with his vibrant style. And wall after wall we can’t help but see the brilliance in his street art. I’ve been telling you guys to pay attention to your surroundings for a while now. It’s not as expensive as those Yeezy’s you’ve been fawning over and it just may save your life. Case in point, I walked past this installation on Nelson Street in the Castleberry Hills Art District in Atlanta almost everyday as I went to work on my mural for this year’s Art, Beats & Lyrics urban art showcase.
