Wake up dreaming and happily stumble into another gorgeous day. Shock white sand set against shimmering multihued blue water and a true blue dream of a sky. Can we fly?
Z serves me a rumrunner and Dietra and I share a club sandwich with fries, using our bev naps for dinner napkins. We ride to Midtown and veg at Tim’s place on 11th, until they depart for a birthday party in Marietta. Then I walk into the night.
My assistant Rico and I are downtown this morning in Atlanta’s original commercial district, the historic Farlie Poplar. We are here to meet an already fairly popular up-and-comer in the ever-burgeoning ATL art scene, PaperFrank. After only three public shows, this 20-year-old visual artist is literally on the cusp of explosion.
While waiting for the start of the lecture by Atlanta-based international sensation Radcliffe Bailey, I wandered the sprawling Woodruff Art Center compound in search of diversion. First, I took in the modern design and paintings I’d seen several times as an active member of the High Museum of Art. Next, the outer grounds of the museum where the facade of Table 1280, Lichtenstein’s vibrant mini house and Rodin’s heartbreaking sculpture are long-time favorites.
A home repair snafu resulted in me not working all day. Then a breezy Friday night in The ATL found me with many entertainment options for the weekend, all of which centered on the thriving art community. Kai Lin Gallery had an opening entitled Dreamscape; Ponce Crush was set to roll the following evening through three galleries on the Ponce corridor: Beep Beep, Young Blood, Kibbee; and Artlantis was a Saturday daytime event I regretted missing last year. Modern Atlanta had also just launched a multi-venue campaign called MA11. What to do?
One of those late spring Southern nights, real heat of day giving way to a balmy, beautiful breeze, and my true love and I have the sunroof open and the windows down as we roll through town to an art benefit entitled Our Lady Nippon. The natural disaster in Japan well chronicled, painter Ashley Norfleet and Art League Atlanta organized a benefit group show at dooGallery to fundraise locally, under the larger umbrella charitable org Give2Asia Artists Help Japan. All proceeds from the event going to the cause.
